100% Sangiovese Grosso. The first plot planted by the Padovanis was this 1.6-hectare hillside plot which they named Bosco for the woodlands or "bosco" completely surrounding this spectacular south-facing site. Because the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG had been closed to any further additions of acreage, Fonterenza had to seek an exception, which was granted and allows them a mere one hectare's worth of fruit under a Brunello label (rest goes into Rosso di Montalcino or Pettirosso).
The farming has been organic from the beginning. The soils are the classic galestro, a blend of clay and schist; they are worked by hand and treated proactively with biodynamic preparations as well as minimal copper or sulfur as needed; grasses and other wild plants grow between the rows. The harvest is by hand in 2-4 passes generally to obtain ideal ripeness and health of the fruit.
The vinification and aging of Fonterenza's Brunello is traditional. The fruit is fermented in tank with native yeasts, macerated for 30-40 days and aged up to 4 years in a range of botti (currently from 11-20 hectoliter Slavonian, German and other wood casks). The 2012 was bottled without filtration in September 2016. 5000 bottles produced.
